The Welcome Pack: Student Life and Ministry (Spring 2024)

Subject line: Do Whatcha Wanna

College isn’t only about academic growth—it’s also a time to form connections, pursue your interests, and try new things. The Department of Student Life & Ministry (SLM) offers endless ways for you to get involved and do whatcha wanna outside the classroom!

Get involved. Express yourself. Have fun.

With more than 100 active student organizations at Loyola, it won’t be hard to find something that fits your interests. You can explore leadership development and engagement opportunities through student organizations, fraternity and sorority life, club sports, ministry programs, and more.

Don’t forget to stop by the Just Ask Me Table in the One Loyola Room on the first floor of the Danna Student Center today (1/17), to say hi to the Krewe Leaders and ask any questions that come up as you get settled at Loyola. We can also connect you with resources, and we’ll be handing out swag bags for incoming students!

Keep scrolling to learn about some of the ways to get involved!

HowlConnect & Corq

We are excited to introduce you to our student engagement platform, HowlConnect, where you can find meaningful campus opportunities, and easily manage your involvement in events and student organizations. Meet Your Student Government Association

Loyola’s Student Government Association (SGA) is deeply involved in matters affecting our campus community. From racial equity issues to sustainability measures to community service, your SGA is here for you on the topics that matter. Loyola’s SGA promises to:

  • Promote student welfare
  • Establish an effective and representative student leadership body
  • Exchange transparent ideas between students and the administration
  • Advocate for student interest and needs
  • Encourage students to be educated on important issues that impact our university
  • Assume our position in SGA with the fullest power and responsibility to lead a trustworthy self-government

The SGA also plays a big role in campus fun, hosting signature events through the University Programming Board (UPB) like Wolf Pack Wednesday, Third Fridays, Crawfish in the Quad, and so much more! UPB is a student-led programming board that is dedicated to the coordination and implementation of campus-wide events that are educational, social, and entertaining.

Stay Active and Join a Team

Campus recreation programs allow you to live an active lifestyle and improve your personal wellness. There are a wide range of sports and fitness programs for students—competitive and non-competitive, organized and informal, group and individual.

  • Intramurals are organized recreational activities that allow you to get involved in a variety of team and individual sports, regardless of your skill level or experience.
  • Club sports are self-organized and self-run university chartered student organizations designed to serve individual interests in different sports and recreational activities.
  • You can also get your sweat or swim on at the University Sports Complex. Download the app MemberMe+ from the Apple Store or Google Play to stay up to date with the USC schedule.

Worship in Your Own Way

Loyola Student Ministry Programs are here to help you find what centers you, feeds your soul, and fuels your passion. Spirituality can come to us in many different forms—from a reflective moment in nature to weekly worship services. Here are some ways to deepen your spirituality at Loyola. Our Interfaith Ministries support students of diverse faith backgrounds, and Catholic Masses and other devotions are celebrated weekly and streamed live on YouTube.

Connect to Your Faith Community

At Loyola, we welcome students from all faith backgrounds! If you would like to connect with a community of students who share your faith, please fill out this form. You will be contacted by the leader of the faith community of your choosing (choose however many communities you want). Thank you for offering the gift of your religious affiliation to the Loyola community! Please reach out to Associate Director of Ministry Ken Weber at kweber@4dian8.com with any questions about getting connected spiritually.

Find Your Spiritual Center

Ignatian Life Communities are weekly student-led small groups who discuss life and faith. ILCs are a way to take time out of your week to reflect, relax, and remind yourself of who you are and where you're headed. Based in Ignatian spirituality, ILCs are open to anyone looking for a great community to help you find God in all things. Don't know what you believe? No problem! As long as you want to explore how you find meaning in your life, an ILC is for you!

Take a Retreat

Here at Loyola, we offer several retreat opportunities to help students explore their spirituality, build community, and reflect on who they are and who they want to be. We encourage you to check out the Awakening Retreat coming up later this spring!

Talk with a Resident Minister

Resident Ministers and Jesuits-in-Residence are available for spiritual conversation and pastoral counseling by appointment. You can also meet and chat with them at their weekly "Sweet-n-Greets" in Biever, Buddig, and Francis Family halls. Learn more about spiritual companioning and counseling available to all students at Loyola.
